5 Questions for Milk Presents
| Tue 8 Oct 2019
Milk Presents and Godson Oloyade are taking over the Creation Space Mon 14 - Sun 20 Oct 2019 and Mon 10 - Fri 14 Feb 2020 for their artist residency. We went to find out more about their plans.
Can you tell us a bit about Milk Presents?
Through internationally acclaimed performance, celebration and disruption, Milk Presents shift perceptions of gender and identity. We create award-winning performance and make space for exchange, entertainment and community - this might be in the form of theatre, workshops, club-nights, symposiums, book groups and more. We are an Associate Company of Derby Theatre and have toured drag king shows, queer myths and adult fairytales across the world.
How would you describe the work that you create?
The theatre we make is a protest. It’s also a celebration and sometimes a bit of a messy one. You know that sticky, messed-up, extraordinary and ambiguous thing called gender? Our work is often about that. Our work fuses new writing, cabaret, queer art forms, live art, storytelling and clowning - it's accessible and joyful and full of music.
What will you be working on during your residency at artsdepot?
A totally new collaboration. Our artistic Director Leo J Skilbeck and choreographer Godson Oloyade met in a workshop series called the Doorway Project at Watford Palace earlier this year and have been excited to fuse their practices on a collaborative project ever since. We will be exploring queer performance, Krump dance and Shakespeare... watch this space!
What elements of the project will you be developing while you’re here?
We'll be working on the very beginning of a new idea. It will be a real testing ground, to see where these different practices merge and what exciting new things can come of it. Generally we'll be looking at love, queer love and good old William Shakespeare to see if we can reclaim some of the cannon for ourselves.
What’s the most useful thing to have with you in the rehearsal space?
Curiosity, decent sound system, extensive snacks.
