Residency Dates: Mon 12 - Fri 23 Mar
Archita Kumar is a London-based dance artist and composer. Her practise is rooted in Kathak dance and Indian classical music. As a dancer, she has worked in both classical and contemporary dance settings. She was featured in Paradiso, an Akademi production, choreographed by Jose Agudo, and is a recipient of the Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund’s Marion North Mentoring Award 2018. She has composed original music for dance and her commercial music releases have received BBC radio airplay.
Archita will be using the residency to begin the development of a new solo choreography that explores themes around Karna, a central character from the Indian epic Mahabharata. The project uses Kathak, a dance form characterised by storytelling, musicality and rhythmic complexity. Archita is interested in exploring the interplay of movement and a dancer-generated soundtrack in real time, and what impact this has on the performer and on the audience.
