Monica Cox is a Spanish and English writer and director working across theatre and film.

Having studied languages at university, Monica is particularly interested in multilingual storytelling and how communication shapes relationships.

During the residency, Monica will be developing Lost in Translation, a multilingual theatre project exploring love across cultures and languages. The piece follows two interconnected couples: Russian Ivan and Colombian Isabella, who begin a relationship online and Chinese translator Li and Lebanese interpreter Riwa, whose long-term relationship in Portugal begins to fracture. The production examines how language shapes connection, particularly through untranslatable words/concepts. Spoken in English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin and Portuguese (to name a few), the project will use digital technologies for creative captioned surtitles and projections to explore what is communicated beyond words and what remains impossible to translate.
