Matty May

Matty May (they/ them) is a working class queer artist writer, performer and facilitator from Barking and Dagenham.

Their work is centred around connection, humour and grit amongst the difficulties and complexities life throws at us. They are particularly passionate about this from the perspective of working class identity, queerness and those that have survived ongoing mental health issues.

During their residency Matty will be developing their new solo show all about joy and pleasure and how it makes life bearable. It’s those moments we find while digging through the dirt of life make it possible to survive. In amongst this work is the connection between joy and grief, moments of dancing, sex, childhood, friendship, letting go and having a very wonderful nephew.

Matty May is the recipient of this year’s Barking and Dagenham-based Artist Residency.
