Big Kun
Big Kun is a London-based theatre company creating culturally provocative, visually arresting and inventive performances.
They bring together artists from different disciplines, moving between mediums and perspectives to challenge social norms and centre nuanced East and Southeast Asian experiences. Their recent work includes the critically acclaimed one-woman show Don’t Call Me China Doll and co-curating the NEW EARTH THEATRE Living Archive exhibition.
During their residency, they will be developing The Runaway Effect, a co-production with Théâtre Lapis, whose work seeks to introduce authentic and aesthetic Japanese artforms to Western audiences. Inspired by yōkai – supernatural beings from Japanese folklore – the production brings together puppetry, live sound and experimental multimedia to create a modern fairytale exploring self-preservation, self-acceptance and abandonment. Together, Big Kun and Théâtre Lapis are investigating how folklore, intercultural perspective and creative visual storytelling can speak to contemporary experiences of identity, fear and belonging to both young and adult audiences.
