curious directive: Frogman
A coming-of-age, supernatural thriller, experienced with Virtual Reality headsets and live performance, this is a ground-breaking theatre experience from double Fringe First Award winners, curious directive.
The Great Barrier Reef, 1995. Meera is eleven. It's her first sleepover. Strawberry dunkaroos, SEGA Megadrive, and band practice descends into stories in sleeping bags by torchlight, swapping coral fragments and theorising about the universe.
Lights off. In the corner, the aquarium is beginning to glow.
Outside in the coral reef, the Frogman dives by moonlight into depths looking for traces of a missing girl as blue police lights reflect across the water. With the annual coral bloom due, creating an underwater snowstorm, time is running out.
Presented by curious directive, Hull UK City of Culture 2017, The Deep and The Old Market in association with Brisbane Powerhouse
Venue: Pentland Theatre
"The technology is incorporated seamlessly and improves both the structure of the piece and the experience of the event generally...this is not to detract from Tessa Parr’s live performance, which is brilliantly pitched and quietly captivating." ★★★★★ Broadway Baby (read the full review)
"Touching and nostalgic." ★★★★ The Independent
"A 360 heightening of the senses" ★★★★ The Sunday Mail
"A lovely, well-told coming-of-age tale about mistakes, hatred, small-town life and who your real friends are." What's On Stage
"The VR experience is fascinating ... a little uncanny. Camilla Clark’s 1990s bedroom set is incredibly effective, full of details that slowly reveal themselves as you look around." The Stage
