Myrto Williams, a visual artist on our 2013 programme sharing an observation on a Year 4 pupil at Hollickwood School:
"Student 'R' is a selective mute, she will never initiate conversation. However through her comic strip / storyboard she was able to communicate in much detail between her characters through speech bubbles. When I was talking to her about her characters she was more able to express feelings and narratives, compared to when I asked her about herself, she was much less responsive. After my second session R's class teacher ran to find me at the end of the day, overjoyed as R had come up to her and initiated conversation with her for the first time ever! Her teacher thanked me as she was sure it was the art workshop which had provoked this."
