Sunday Buzz: Dee Byrne Quartet
Dee Byrne is a saxophonist, composer and improviser based in London. An active figure in the UK creative scene and beyond, Dee is involved in various original jazz and improvising ensembles, notably her own quintet Entropi, which released its second album Moment Frozen in September 2017 to critical acclaim. The album recording was supported by a PRSF Women Make Music grant in 2016. The quintet recently completed a ten-date tour in Autumn 2017 supported by Arts Council England and PRSF Open Fund. Other projects include electronics/improv duo, Deemer and Cath Roberts' large ensemble Favourite Animals.
Dee also co-runs LUME, a small artist-run organisation with a focus on the creation of new original/improvised music. Activities have included a double-bill tour in 2015, a monthly residency at The Vortex, two festivals and a most recently a performance at EFG London Jazz Festival 2017 – a collaboration with Swiss musicians produced by Serious and generously supported by the Swiss Cultural Fund. LUME’s offshoot record label Luminous releases projects by co-founders Dee and Cath Roberts.
For this performance, Dee Byrne Quartet will navigate the balance between freedom and structure by juxtaposing recognisable elements from jazz history with a healthy dose of group improvisation. Expect strong melodies, powerful riffs and dark grooves.
