#SelfCare is an exhibition of mixed media artworks created by participants on the Art for Wellbeing workshops and courses at Barnet Southgate College.
The exhibition features artworks by parents from Barnet’s Underhill Children’s Centre, and paintings by members from the Mind-In-Enfield evening art course. There is also a collaborative painting which was created at the Art & Wellbeing workshop at Stephens House & Gardens, during London’s Creativity & Wellbeing week. These initiatives are part of an outreach programme funded by Barnet Southgate College to promote wellbeing and Adult Community Learning, in partnership with local groups and organisations.
This exhibition's artworks are created out of self expression and imagination, creative acts which change thinking and feelings, and therefore intrinsically therapeutic. Artists have long been advocates of wellbeing: they actively watch and take notice of the world around them, connecting audiences and networks, always asking questions. Everyone’s an artist, aren’t they?
The title of the exhibition #SelfCare references social media and the politics of wellbeing. During the Art for Wellbeing courses and workshops participants make personal artworks inspired by historical and contemporary artists, including British Royal Academy artist Tracey Emin, under the guidance of workshop leader Rebekah Dean.
