The Japan Foundation - Out of the Ordinary/Extraordinary: Japanese Contemporary Photography
27 October – 24 November 2005
This provocative new exhibition introduces the work of eleven emerging Japanese lens-based artists exploring themes of the individual, the urban family, and the public gaze. These photographers, with their differing values and viewpoints, try to give a new form of expression to the complexities of our ever-changing world and the instability of Japanese society behind the façade of economic prosperity. They question the very things in their own culture that have long been accepted as 'obvious' – family relationships, the traditional role of women, and the stranger within a crowd - and attempt to validate and reconstruct through their artistic process.
Curated by Kashara Michiko of Tokyo’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
