Sparkle and Spin

Textile Sculptures by Paola McClure

Sunday 16th September 2012 - Saturday 10th November 2012 12.00PM- 4.00PM

Dundee based artist, Paola McClure is well known for her intriguing, alien-like creatures and voluptuous upholstered female figures which she crafts from vintage fabrics and second-hand clothing. She is interested in fabrics, pattern and colour and her influences range from the primitive to the camp.

Although this highly individual work has a dark edge, it is impossible to escape the sense of fun, and the joy of making, which is in evidence throughout the exhibition.

Taking its name from a popular children's book of the 1950s by Ann and Paul Rand, 'Sparkle and Spin' features new 'soft sculpture' characters and large-scale installation pieces which have plenty to enthrall and inspire visitors, young and old alike.

Paola works in a range of scales, from very small dolls to large-scale, life-sized figures and landscapes and has even used a full-sized coffin as the starting point for a piece of work in this exhibition.

Sparkle and Spin is a touring exhibition produced by 20-21 Visual Arts Centre and Paola has created several new pieces of work for this show, including two pieces of work that visitors are able to interact with to make their own sculpture or picture.
