I am even my own version of the Cuban revolution!” declares Pedro Luis Ferrer. This spirit of reinvention appears throughout Ferrer’s work. He continually draws upon his country’s rich musical traditions and transforms them to create new meaning. Ferrer takes changüí – from the mountains of Guantánamo, in Cuba’s East – and mixes it with trova espirituana and coros de claves, two styles from Central Cuba where Ferrer was born, resulting in changüisa – a new name for a new style that is all his own.
