Dante or Die begin their Creation Space Residency

Can you tell us about Dante or Die?

Dante or Die is a company who make theatre performances in different spaces. We’ve made shows in hotel rooms, self-storage buildings and leisure centres – always looking at ways of creating theatrical magic in very normal buildings. As Co-Artistic Directors we dream up idea for projects and make them happen with different teams of people that we put together.

How would you describe the work you create?

It’s often quite intimate. Our last three shows have invited groups of audiences to be flies on the wall in close proximity to our cast of actors, dancers and musicians who almost rub shoulders with you. If you come to one of our shows you’ll feel like you are part of the experience because you’re in the world of our characters and on a physical journey with them. We’re really excited about creating performances that might make you see buildings or spaces that you’re familiar with in a different way.

What will you be working on during your residency at artsdepot?

We’re at the very beginning of a new show called User Not Found. The project is all about our digital legacies after we die. Did you know you can now nominate someone to take over your Facebook page when you die? We’re exploring the digital world in terms of what we leave behind us after we pass away. It will be a theatre performance with a digital centre to it – so audiences will follow the story through reading WhatsApp messages, emails, looking at Instagram posts at the same time as the actor that you’re following.

Which elements of the project will you be developing while you’re here?

We’re researching and testing out ideas. Our collaborators include writer and theatre-maker Chris Goode and a digital design company called Marmelo. We’re asking each other personal questions about our own social media use, learning about how British people engage with the online world and talking to researchers and journalists who specialize in this field.

We’re running workshops with different groups of people at artsdepot – like the over 60’s creative writing group and the youth theatre – so that we can get a snapshot of how different generations use and think about their digital identities.

Our idea for the show is that it will be performed in cafés, so we’ll also be running some improvisations in the café space – look out for us!

What’s the most useful thing to have with you in the rehearsal room?

The people! Our work is characterized by the collaborations we create. Much of this residency will be sitting around a table crunching ideas together – from character and plot to figuring out how to make 100 smartphones sync at the same time. At this stage, it’s definitely everyone’s brains that we need firing on all cylinders. And biscuits, of course.
